Did you know there’s more than one type of ultrasound scan in pregnancy? They are undertaken depending on the stage of the pregnancy, and also for various reasons such as calculating the chances of the pregnancy, being affected by any illnesses, risks, peace of mind, and many more.
From early pregnancy to the anomaly scan, ultrasounds check that your baby is developing as it should be. We are going to look at some of the ultrasound scans on offer at Ultraworld Scanning Services.
Scans are available on the NHS, or you can pay to have them done privately. While routine scans are largely the same whether you go private or not, there are certain extras you will typically only be able to get by going private.
Keep scrolling to find out all you need to know about the different types of pregnancy ultrasound scans – plus, our recent reviews reveal what parents and our customers think of our service.
Ultrasound Pregnancy Scan
What is an ultrasound scan?
It's always a useful reminder of what an ultrasound scan is. When you go for a pregnancy scan, the sonographer (a specialist trained in obstetrics and gynecology ultrasound scans) puts ultrasound gel on your tummy or the probe and then moves the handheld probe across your skin. While the gel can be a bit cold, the scans are painless.
The probe sends out ultrasound waves – sound waves with a frequency higher than the human ear can hear – to produce images of your baby, which the sonographer interprets on a screen.
Ultrasound scans in pregnancy have several purposes:
To check your baby's size and, at the early pregnancy dating scan, help calculate your due date.
To monitor whether your baby is growing normally.
To check whether you're having one baby, twins, or more.
To detect some abnormalities.
To show if you have too much or too little amniotic fluid.
To show the position of the placenta and your baby, which can affect whether you plan to give birth vaginally or if you might need a caesarean section.
How many pregnancy ultrasound scans do you get on the NHS?
All pregnant women in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland should be offered at least two ultrasound scans on the NHS as part of their antenatal appointments schedule, known as a fetal anomaly screening programme (FASP).
You might be offered more than two scans – for example, if there are concerns about your health or your baby’s growth – but for most women having straightforward, healthy pregnancies, the early pregnancy scan and the anomaly scans are recommended.
At Ultraworld Scanning Services we offer the following:
Early Pregnancy Scan
This can take place between 8 and 14 weeks, the early pregnancy or dating scan is your first pregnancy ultrasound. This ultrasound scan will establish several things, including how far along you are, your approximate due date, how many babies you're expecting, and how your baby is developing.
Anomaly Scan
Between 18 and 21 weeks, you’ll have your anomaly scan, which is sometimes called a mid-pregnancy scan. The sonographer will take a detailed look at your baby’s heart, brain, bones, spinal cord, face, kidneys, and abdomen to check for a range of conditions.
First Trimester Dating & Reassurance Scan
At Ultrasound Scanning Services we will see you between 6 and 15 weeks for this scan.
This scan assesses the location of the pregnancy, we confirm the pregnancy by visualisation of the heartbeat, Dating is done by measuring the crown rump length (CRL) of the embryo, Single or multiple pregnancies are also checked and confirmed.
At the end of the ultrasound scan you get to take 3 black and white thermal prints for keepsake, and a detailed printed ultrasound report.
A free follow-up scan can be arranged if needed, and we allow up to 3 guests including children.
Fetal Wellbeing & Gender Scan
At Ultrasound Scanning Services we will see you between 15 and 38 weeks for this scan.
This scan assesses the fetus's wellbeing. We confirm the gender of your baby, which is extremely accurate (99.9%).
At the end of the ultrasound scan you get to take 6 black and white thermal prints for keepsake, a 4D sneak a peek and a detailed fetal well being report
A free follow-up scan can be arranged if needed, and we allow up to 3 guests including children.
Fetal Growth & Presentation Scan
At Ultrasound Scanning Services we will see you between 22 and 40 weeks for this scan.
The main purpose of a growth and presentation scan is to measure the baby and estimate the baby's weight. During a growth and presentation scan the sonographer will measure the baby's head, abdomen and femur. The machine will use these measurements to estimate the baby's weight.
At the end of the ultrasound scan you get to take 6 black and white thermal prints for keepsake, a CD of images and all baby images emailed to you and a detailed fetal well being report
A free follow-up scan can be arranged if needed, and we allow up to 3 guests including children.
Our 4D Ultrasound Scan Packages
At Ultrasound Scanning Services we will see you between 22 and 40 weeks for these scans.
Why have a 4D scan during pregnancy?
In comparison with 2D ultrasound, 4D ultrasound offers real benefits for the fetus's assessment of prenatal condition. The most benefits of 4D ultrasound could be a real-time assessment of the fetal face, grimacing, breathing movements, swallowing, mouthing, isolated eye-blinking and revealing the direction of the limbs.
There's no reason why you should or shouldn't have a 4D scan, as they are not considered medically necessary, but are rather classed as "recreational", "reassurance" or "keepsake" scans.
Check out our 4 packages here https://www.ultraworldscanningservices.co.uk/pregancy-scans
Like most of our ultrasound scans, you will get a detailed fetal well-being scan that includes fetal measurements, growth estimation, placenta location, and amniotic fluid assessment.
You have a choice to get the gender confirmation, this is optional. We provide a 10-minute DVD recording of the scan. You will get around 20 – 25 4D images on a CD.
We provide 4 coloured 3D/4D 6 X 4 prints, a complimentary coloured 4D A4 print, and a complimentary Baby Picture frame. All 4D digital images emailed to you too.
